Grandma's Chocolate Cherry Cookies

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/3 cup salted butter softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 24 maraschino cherries

Frosting

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons warm milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°. Place parchment paper on a cookie sheet.

  2. Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt together. Set aside.

  3. In a separate bowl cream together the butter and sugar.

  4. Add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract and mix well.

  5. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, while mixing, and mix until well combined.

  6. Roll the dough into 1 ½ inch diameter cookie balls. Poke an imprint into the center with your thumb, and insert the cherry. Wrap the dough around the cherry, then pinch off the opening to seal.

  7. Place the cookies on the prepared cookie sheet, spacing them at least 2 inches apart.

  8. Cook for 8-10 minutes. Remove and let cool completely.

  9. For the chocolate frosting, place the butter and chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for about 20 seconds, mix well.

  10. Repeat that microwaving/mixing process in 20 second intervals a few more times until it’s just melted.
  11. Add your WARM milk to the choco-butter (cold will cause the chocolate to seize) and watch it turn into a lovely chocolate sauce as you mix.
  12. When the cookies are cold, dip them in the chocolate sauce upside down to give them a lovely chocolate yamaka.
  13. If your patience pot is empty, eat away. Otherwise, wait until the chocolate hardens and THEN eat your heart out.
